Only £8 Ringo! That's a bargain! I noticed Sky only showed it a couple of times on the movie channel before I got a chance to see it. Wonder if it has any extras on the dvd?

Only £8 Ringo! That's a bargain! I noticed Sky only showed it a couple of times on the movie channel before I got a chance to see it. Wonder if it has any extras on the dvd? It has a featurette that lasts 3 minutes and 38 seconds...mostly Alan...Alan...and more Alan...mostly just a recap of the movie, but he does speak a little, answering questions, as if in an interview a couple of times..and a couple behind the scene snippets! It is a very well done featurette. So...you decide...is it worth it ! I sure think so ;D! He is such a brilliant actor! There is also a 'Making History' slide show...but I can't remember what the pictures are! Must go check!

I went into HMV today and they didn't have it out (wondering if with all the sale-hype they might not have stocked up on the new stuff yet...). I shall check back later in the week

Oh...watched this again yesterday, it was on HBO, and I have to say that I forgot how much I loved it! It is a great movie all around as his usually are. And I have to say I love the man in a suit...*ahem*
Funny to hear him with a southern drawl! Saw it on Walmart.com for 8 dollars and change so now I have to buy it!

^Well said, Tigereyes. That was the times and that was the true story of what happened. It doesn't make sense to sugar coat it.
When I moved to Miami from New Jersey, there were white and black restrooms and white and black water fountains and blacks had to sit in the back of the bus. I was pretty young, but I knew it was wrong even then.
It's a good thing to show just how Vivian Thomas had to keep himself in the background. And it was wonderful to see him finally get the acknowledgement and the doctorate that he deserved. I particularly liked how they showed Alan's and Mos Def's portraits at the end and faded them out to Blaylock's and Thomas' portraits.
It's on HBO+ on 6/1 at 9pm.

Alfred Blalock was a man who saw only one thing, the pain and misery of others and his goal in life was to alleviate that pain; to make it possible for people to survive the shock of an injury or the defect of birth. He was very passionate for his research and saw a valuable allie in the keen intelligence of Vivien Thomas. Together, they made history, even though Vivien was forced by the conventions of the time, to stand in the shadows. Vivien Thomas was also a man who sought to alleviate the pains of others and through the gift of intellect and insight, became one of the most important individuals of the time, though others refused to acknowledge the fact and recognition came many years later. Drs. Blalock and Thomas had a symbiotic relationship for many years and shortly before his death, Alfred admitted he had regrets and Vivien understood what regrets that were being referred to without another word being uttered. All in all, 'Something The Lord Made' is one of the best films; I highly recommend viewing this movie.

I have to agree with you RL. The movie shows the way things were at the time and I think they did a great job portraying that. One of my favorite parts of the movie is the end when they show both of the portraits, the way they should be...together. They did an incredible thing and one would not have suceeded without the other it seems.

Well the first time I saw this movie on TV, I instantly fell in love with it. Alan Rickman is truly amazing in this film. I loved this movie so much, I even went out and bought the movie.

I've ordered this film from Play.com for a mere £4.99. I cannot wait. It sounds much like The Colour Purple type of story... and oh boy did that film make me cry!
From what you guys have been saying about it, it sounds like the sort of film that, though uncomfortable, (believe me Racism, Animal Testing are TWO of the things that really MAKES me sick too! I grew up in a rather multicultural society but when you're watching these sorts of films you have to take in the times that they are living in! And then people were REALLY pig ignorant!) would be a film that I would love, as I love to watch a film that really makes me THINK!
Coincedentally Candescence I love the man in a suit too!

Come on surely there is more to be said on this film than what he's wearing? It has been despatched so I can't wait! I'll get it either tomorrow or Saturday! Edit: Yesssssssssssss it has come in the post this very morning and probably going to watch it tonight after Doctor Who of course. Edit no2: I loved this film! It's brilliant! I don't think Blalock was evil, I think he was a victim of the times and did not necessarily mean evil to Vivien, and he did give Vivien chances that others would not have! I think that he was brilliant and I loved the ending and it made me cry! Especially at the end of the film when Viviens portrait was hung up on the wall next to his old friend and mentor. It had resonances of Driving Miss Daisy. As for the accent Alan can drawl in my ear like that ANY day!

One of my favorite AR movies so far, his portrayal of Dr. Alfred Blalock really got me into the entirety of the movie. It was more of the sense of moving past the accent he uses and appreciating how he channels his character.

I had to get past the accent, too. It was the first Alan film I'd seen where he uses an American accent. He's brilliant in it, as well as his co-star. And it's very interesting to hear him deliver the lines about never letting a surgeon get you under the knife. Kind of ironic, considering he's one of the most famous surgeons in history. ;D And I get this sense of shame when Dr. Blalock has to be practically kicked in the head to get his co-worker a raise. And I get a thrill when he basically waves aside prejudice when insisting on his overseeing the operation. That's a dedicated scientist for you. All he sees is his work. It's not a great personality trait, sometimes, but you just learn to say "he's like that". He's very believeable as the focussed, brilliant doctor. And don't you love that he recognizes his shortcomings and states quite openly that he won't change? ;D You gotta love that kind of direct honesty.

Agreed, he was the job, but he still let certain things slide. Mos Def and Alan Rickman should do more films together, they were a brilliant combination.. I really love this film and have ranked it in my top 5 Alan favourites.

I'm not sure if this trailer will work, but I'll post it here. It was a link from IMDB! The trailer will either start on it's own, or you'll need to click on 'watch trailer', in the 'Something the Lord Made' box, or I believe a different preview or comercial starts instead ! Enjoy !
