He is great in this film, but then again, what film is he not good in..... Good point. I liked him in this one, even though Eamon De Valera isn't one of the nicest characters in the story. I love watching historical dramas in general, so this movie already had a one-up. I don't really mind if it's inaccurate or not. You just can't help but keep your eye on Dev even when there are other characters in the scene. I loved that mischievious look on his face when he is making an imprint of the key on a prayer candle. The priest is praising Dev's virtues, but Dev is busy planning his escape. Hehe.

I watched the film for the first time yesterday and it was nice to see Alan playing not a good man. He has that special something in his face what makes him play good and bad and grey guys and it all is great when he performs.
De Valera made me like him at first and it seems it was a great Alan's job because it appeared later than he was false and mean. I loved the scene with a fur and in a car (Alan is great as aunties in hats and so on! ;D), I loved the scene with the priest and with De Valera sitting in the chamber, listening to Collins's explanations if to accept the solution for Ireland or not, then going out in protest. Alan as a kind of a preacher was nice too (when he wanted to convince the Irish people that Collin's solution is bad).

I was surprised I actually liked this film as I only wanted to watch it for Alan.
My favourite line in the movie is:
[glow=red,2,300]Can we do this without all the profanities![/glow] ;D
But I looked up Eamon De Valera and he can't have been that mean as he was constantly voted in office, yes Michael was a revolutionary but Dev was a politician who's agenda became different as time grew on. At the end of the day Dev was a human and obviously the Irish people loved him, and he lived a fairly long life as well.
I have family history of this, my ancestor was Joseph Addison, a politician (belonged to the Whigs the then version of the Liberal Democrats) and poet in the late 17th early 18th century and a contemporary of Jonathan Swift. They shared the same political views but quite late on in their friendship Jonathan Swift changed politics (to the Tories I think) and lost Joseph as a friend forever after that!
It don't make someone evil, just because they change their affiliations.
In Eamons view Michael didn't deliver on what he said he would and he became disillusioned and so began his own party. That's my take on it! And Dev did cry when he heard what Michael said that he was prepared to die for and with him so there must have been some remnant of guilt there!
Also did anyone catch Jonathan Rhys Meyers?

Well I just watched it for the first time, and yes I did notice a very young and cute Jonathan Rhys Myers...love him from Velvet Goldmine I do!
Anyway, back to Alan. The man has presence, a great force that makes him command the screen even when the scene is not his. And the suits do him justice I tell you...he has an air or power that just can not be ignored.
No his character was not the nicest guy, but then, lots of his characters have not been. He has a knack for playing them. Of course, he has a knack for playing anything. There has not been anything yet I have disliked him in. I doubt there will be.

I was finally able to see this truly inspirational and moving film. I really enjoyed this movie, the struggle and the fighting that took place between Ireland and Britain....so that Ireland could win it's independence. As for Alan Rickman's character Eamon DE Valera, I must say, he plays the part really well. At first when I started watching the movie...that's when my little cousins kept interupting....I though Alan Rickman's character died in the beginning of the film after he wrote that letter to Michael Collins. Gosh, I hate watching movies when people decide to interrupt.I love watching movies about History and all the events that took place years ago, way before I was even born.

When I got Michael Collins, I was only expecting to fast forward to Alan's scenes, but not so! What a great movie!

Just saw this today for the first time. I'm so glad that Alan was in it because otherwise I wouldn't have thought to watch it...but it was a brilliant movie!!! Honestly, I would even consider watching it if Alan wasn't in it, but he does his part so well!
Is it wrong of me to think he was so hot as an altar boy?

I thought he was hotter dressed as a woman at the breakout, I know weird aren't I!
The Altar boy scene was fantastic, and I loved the look on his face as he was burning the shape of the key into the candle. Especially as the Priest was going on about how helpful he was and how kind and charitable, and Alans face in that was brilliant. The smile and the smug self assuredness, it had me giggling and I suppose h'mm yeah it's the robes, I swear it is the robes!
He looks fantastic in those robes!

Alan just looks fantastic in anything - robes, jammies, dressing gown, boots, erm . . . I'll stop now!
