I havent seen it either. But watched the clip downloads. He sure looked good.
In that scene, in the outdoors, why was she sponging him and the other guy hosing him down with water ?
That sponging should have been my job. I do a good sponge ! Turn to the front, now , Mr Rickman. Gotta get every spot just squeaky clean !!

In that scene, in the outdoors, why was she sponging him and the other guy hosing him down with water ? Ah, the joys of poison ivy. The movie wasn't all that bad . . . although our lovely Mr. Rickman was very whiney and annoying throughout (but I suppose that was his character). And his voice was absolutely ruined by his American accent. Maybe it's just the difference in accents - or perhaps he only knows how to do really super-flat, horrible American accents. Bleh.

Ah, the joys of poison ivy. LOL!!! I understand this is a love triangle movie so maybe she was trying to hose off all that extra testosterone! I have this on order and hope to get it fairly soon. He managed in Die Hard but I still heard the slight British inflection in some of what he said in that scene when he was pretending to be an American. He adopted an accent that was rather 'flat', as you've said, and hard to place. I'll have to pay attention when I get it. It's not something I can place. Most American dialects are more 'colorful' and distinctive. I mean, I came from the Bronx originally (NY City), and that dialect is distinctly different from a Brooklyn dialect which is different from the Long Island dialects or the Jersey dialect. And of course there are the southern, new england, midwestern dialects and their degrees and variants. I suspect it's probably just like that in Britain depending on where a person grew up. When I listen to the BBC, I can hear the difference sometimes. Oh drat!!! I just found out Amazon credited me for something. I suspect it was my Rasputin tape from a private dealer. Grr....grrr....

When I listen to the BBC, I can hear the difference sometimes. Yeah, I somehow don't think he was trying for a 'regional' sound. I've noticed this with British actors in the past - when trying out an American accent, then go very flat and generic. Doesn't sound right at all. I'm fairly good at noticing variations in accents though (language/linguistics degree). This is OT - but I love AR's accent in Dogma. Very 'not posh' sounding (for being the Voice of God! LOL) Is it a London accent, I wonder? (Any British reading this want to clue me in?)

Yeah, I'm waiting to see this show up again on the comedy channel. I've seen it on there twice in a few months time so hope to see it again and tape off-air at that time. I enjoy AR's natural manner of speaking though so it doesn't matter if he is an "American" character or not. Any accent he uses is fine with me. ;D
Slightly OT but related to your comment - Gary Oldman (Sirius) had me fooled. I had no idea he was British because I'd only seen him do American accents and he was so good at it, I was surprised to hear him in an interview from Lost In Space with that British accent.

Gary Oldman does a wonderful American accent! It definitely doesn't hurt my ears! ;D

Okay, finally saw Dark Harbor. As to the accent, yeah, it was flat and to be honest the British accent did break through in various places but I loved that so didn't care. The character was meant to be whiney in general but he had one or two great monologues that sounded so heartfelt that who cared about the accent or lack of one.
For those who didn't see it but saw the earlier comment) The hose-down scene was because he'd gotten into poison ivy as someone said and his wife was scrubbing his skin (amidst a lot of angry complaining about the pain of it) while the male guest was holding the hose on him.
I will say the ending really surprised me (and that's not easy to do). I was expecting this movie to be more of a Cape Fear type thing but it wasn't.
SPOILERS HERE so don't go on if you don't want to know some of what happened.
I had to watch it twice to pick up on the subtle series of betrayals, not just by the wife (who remained faithful up until near the end) and by the husband who either before hand or during the course of the movie gets into a relationship with the bum they rescue. I was unsure about when all this started or when they both plotted to 'do in' the wife and perhaps that was irrelevant to the tale. Maybe they left it that way on purpose. Consequently, while I enjoyed watching AR kissing his wife in the early part of the movie and enjoyed watching him doing an equally romantic looking kiss scene with the figure in the black hoodie (whose face you don't see), I confess to being a bit yukked out to find out that the person he was loving on (in the hoodie)was that 'bum' who clearly had done SO MUCH more in this movie than just hang out with them. This is just me and my personal preferences mind you. I just find watching 2 guys kissing to be a turn off so if this excites you then by all means, enjoy it. But if it dredges up the yuk-response, then be fore-warned.
Secondly, it's not the kind of film to watch in front of children. I wasn't sure what to expect. For the most part it was all pretty harmless and there was nothing they haven't already seen in hundreds of movies. However, they were watching it at the end when AR undresses, and is walking toward the back of the boat, and even though it was filmed from the side and from a distance, my younger daughter, still quite prudish yelled, "MAMA!!! Is he naked?" And trust me, it was a rhetorical statement. And before I could come up with any comment, they switch views to a slightly closer front shot as he dives off the boat. And then he is swimming to shore. Once there, you see him, still undressed, from the back, walking up the path. I was sorta stuck at this point, and could never have chased them out or gotten to the remote quick enough to prevent my younger girl from hollering, "Oh my God! Naked Snape!!!" And throwing in at least half a dozen hilarious facial expressions in the process.
So in any case, if you have younger children, you may wanna be aware of the above so that you can get them preoccupied elsewhere toward the end of the movie.

This post is filled with spoilers!!!!!I agree, it was very surprising. It certainly wasn't what I was expecting. I got the feeling that they were *clears throat* lovers before they picked him up along side of the road. If you watch it again, or at least the ferry scene, you may see a hint there when Alan's character goes into that room upstairs, and then soon after the 'bum' goes into the room. There is a moment when they are both in there together. Not long, but ...hum..it is long enough for some kind of word exchange or look exchange or something. agreed! I could have warned you about the ending, but I didn't want to spoil it for you ! Sorry that your kids had to see that! By the way, if you haven't seen it already, don't watch AABA with them!

Plus - when ARs character leaves the two of them 'alone' to go golfing, when he had previously been so 'worried' about the boy being in the house at all. Then, when he comes back and only has two lobsters. He claims it's because he didn't think he'd be hungry (bad clams) - but I think it's because the first plan to get her out of the way ('don't forget to get the mushrooms, dear") didn't work - the first thing the boy says to ARs character is "You have a loyal wife" - code for 'she didn't fall for it'. It's great to go back and pick out all the clues along the way. Definitely! I was a little embarassed watching it with my husband even. . . during a certain - ahem - scene, he said something like "I see why you AR fans like this movie" - aaaah!

You are right, I noticed a number of these things on the second viewing, the first of which was how the kid drops to the ground as soon as the car comes in view (in retrospect, that could have been because he was waiting on them though how he got beat up looking is beyond me...though I guess I could come up with some speculations.) And I did notice the two of them on the boat in the same location at the same time and how David wasn't acting all hissy or suspicious about it. Or how he wanted the kid gone yet covered him with the blanket at night (a particularly 'tender' thing to do). It's the sort of thing I do for my girls when they fall asleep on the sofa or the sort of thing my husband does often enough for me in the same situation. It could be the sort of thing a tenderhearted woman would think of in the case of a stranger but the implied antagonism between david and the kid early on caused this 'caring' from the husband to be odd. Also the meal challenge could have been avoided but wasn't. And all those things going wrong in their attempts to get him off the island.
And of course, there was the scheming of the suicide note and how to get her to write and sign it. He got that 'action' gearing up fairly early.
Yes, the mushroom scenes also became more suspicious.
As for the two men kissing, as I said, it roused the Yuk-factor in me, but then again, you gotta give AR credit for attempting the scene. If what I've read is true about him being a bit shy, then maybe this was something he wanted to do in his craft that allowed him to push hmself.
OH MAN!!! You mean there is a good scene in AABA. Okay, you are costing me money now. After mentioning the scene, I had to order it just find out what happened. LOL. ;D My husband tolerates my 'obsessions' and will watch these films with me but there are days when he will give me a look that clearly says, "You spent money for this???" Fortunately, to date, all of AR's roles have been entertaining in one way or another. Then again, maybe I should watch AABA...alone. Is it that steamy?

He got that 'action' gearing up fairly early. Oh yeah - I'm sure the boat 'breaking down' was just a chance for them to talk! And the note - as soon as I realized she was dead I thought - the note! That was when it hit me that it was all a plan, and made me go back and think about every little other thing. Oh no! I do hope you like it now that I've cost you money!! It's a strange movie, but has its appeal. The scene I'm talking about is rather steamy yes. It doesn't have nudity (well, it does have a bit of female nudity), but it's pretty risque nonetheless. I would definitely avoid watching it with your daughters!! Plus the subject matter - in the end - probably won't be appropriate for them to view. Alan is, of course, excellent in it throughout!

I guess that's a good thing about a movie, as odd as it may seem while viewing it, when you can't notice the 'signs' of what's happening until you see the end. And to me, one of the best things about the movie was that it had so much of AR throughout. Oh yes, you cost me money (but at least I got it for a decent DVD price--normal, slightly reduced DVD pricing). So no complaints. I am glad I was forewarned because I'll watch it by myself. Does Alan have a decent part in this one or is it fairly small. anyway, thanks for the 'review' of this. I finally got Robin Hood (extended version) and Sense and Sensibility. I am happy with those acquisitions. I've wanted to see Mesmer and Rasputin but, alas (as Dumbledore would say), they are either hard to find or way to expensive.

Well I went to Blockbuster last night with a list of Alan Rickman movies I have not seen yet and wish to see. As I got there, I looked around for the video's, the only one I found was Dark Harbor, I was so happy, I've been dieing to see this movie. So I rented it, and watched it last night. I actually really liked the movie, I had no idea what to expect, but it turned out to be a good movie, a bit short though. As the movie started, I began to notice things here and there, before I saw this movie,I knew little about what this movie was truly about. In the beginning when they started to argue in the car, I just though, ok a little couple arguement, no harm in that. And gosh, what did Alan Rickman do to his voice?? It was so weird...it sounded like him....but with an American accent. Well...as they were driving and that one guy step down the path out of the woods and fell right when the car came into view...I knew something was not right, I looked like it was planned out. That guy just gave me the creeps...........and as the story continued to unfold, you find David and Alexis sharing their home with him. I mean it looked like David wanted him there, even though he kept telling his wife, he wants him out of the house. And then when that guy stays the night, David covers him up with a blanket, a really nice gesture to a guy he does not want to be there. And in the movie, I noticed the quick glances Alan Rickman's character and the young guy kept giving each other, like they knew each other. I think they did know each other for a while actually. Well......to skip the other details...I would not want to give away the whole movie to those who have not seen the movie yet. But.....one thing is still on my mind and is puzzling me.....why did David at the end of the movie, take off all his clothes, and drive completely naked into the water?? Did he do that so he can forget his past, was that away for him to begin a fresh new start in life? Oh and the very ending shocked me a bit....with him kissing that......... *person*. But over all the movie was great, I loved it.Oh and that Alan Rickman has a really cute *bum*....*smiles*

Not really creepy....but it's a great movie.... I agree, I didn't find it creepy either. I loved the twist, but I had to watch it twize to get the wole story. It was so much fun seeing it for the second time and seeing all the clues you missed the first time! And seeing Alan "a`la natural" is not a bad bonus. The kiss was a bit unsetteling, but it was sweet...if I didn't think about the person he was actually kissing.
