Ringo I got it free! lol. I was owed a free recording from Brittania magazine, and that was in the magazine at the time I was owed it so I got it. I watched the first four episodes. You're right he is like a very young Snape, BUT, somehow I think he (Slope) is more evil than Snape. It also explains the chemistry he had with Geraldine McEwan in Robin Hood doesn't it!

I just watched this for the first time this weekend . . . the production value was pretty low - but I really got into the characters and plot anyway. AR was soooo perfect as the 'Slippery Slope'. Wow!

When I watched Barchester for the first time, my friend and I thought we'd cheat and skip to the part where Slope comes into it, but quickly realised that we couldn't follow the story at all! It was quite a slow production, but well worth watching! The slippery-ness of Slope just oozed out of Alan so easily!

What great timing for this movie to come in the mail, when I can simply lay in bed all weekend and watch it. Woohoo! I just finished episode 4. Why didn't anyone tell me he isn't even in episode 1 and 2? Well, I know I needed to watch them anyway, or I wouldn't know what was going on. I am loving this movie. I can't watch anymore episodes tonight because my husband is actually watching this with me, and he has to go to work. He said "don't you dare watch the next one without me." He might even take the DVD with him to make sure I don't watch anymore. He is so funny! That's o.k. though, guess what I'm going to watch when he is at work? S & S, and probably Truly Madly Deeply. I might even have time for Robin Hood with the FF button . Shhh...don't tell him! hehe ;D! Tomorrow, we watch the final three episodes! Yeah ! Can't wait!

(He wouldn't let me watch 'Pride & Prejudice all in one go for exactly the same reason. LOL) Isn't it a nice piece of work? All the characters are unique and fun to watch. I adored the warden. (I doubt this is a spoiler, because I think the scene is on the 3rd disc - but I'll place this warning here anyway!) One of the funniest scenes for me was where the (former) warden goes to visit his daughter and her sister-in-law, but then leaves when Slope comes to visit, and comes back. Then, when his daughter says something like 'That's a lot of trouble to go to just to avoid someone' and he says 'I'd do as much for the Bishop's wife the next time'. Ooooh so subtly snarky. I love it!

Actually you just made that scene better for me, for some reason that line slipped right passed me. I loved that scene already. It was so funny. Now it is even funnier . OOOOOOO but......Don't tell me anymore. We haven't yet got a chance to watch the remaining three episodes! I can't wait! My husband had to work later in the day and we were too busy before he went to work . Hopefully we will get to watch it this weekend or some lazy week night this week! It's funny how our husbands are so alike !

I forgot to tell you..I finished the episodes on Saturday ! I really enjoyed them. Alan was absolutely stunning. I want to watch it again when I have time, but I am ready to discuss it when you are. First, I loved the scene when the uh...lady (I can't remember her name - I am bad with names) came in to gripe about the fact that Alan went to the Quivifal's (sp) place and told him to turn down to job. The entire scene was so heated and intense and magnificent. I couldn't believe it. I was holding my breath through the whole scene. I hope you know which scene I mean. It was the scene when she was asked to leave the room so they could finish some business . The way Alan was speaking to her, and her to him and man...it was so intense ;D! It was absolutely outstanding!

You're absolutely right, that's the most riveting sequence probably in the whole movie. He lays it all on the line, and her husband sides with Slope and asks her to leave the room. I remember thinking "Round one to Slope!" Ooh - but she eventually got her revenge, didn't she? I liked the ending, when he was leaving them and said something like (can't remember the exact line) 'I hope you both live a very long time. You deserve each other' and then that little smirk he gives them. Priceless! ;D Oh - and what about that scene where he's nibbling on that woman's fingers, professing his love, when he knows he's safe because she's married and she calls him on it? The look on his face when he fears she's serious . . . I loved it! His performance was delectable!

I am so glad I purchased "The Barchester Chronicles". First of all, you actually get to see Alan getting some decent screen time. But, despite my adoration for the astounding Alan, Donald Pleasance absolutely blows me away with his performance. And then there is also Nigel Hawthorne, who is another fantastic actor. All the women seem to be quite well cast, and played by very good actresses. So on top of Alan in more than a few minutes of a two-hour movie, you get to see some real character development, and fine performances all around. Not to mention an intriguing story. Well worth the DVD price, and it most definitely is available in region 1 at amazon.com now.

Got myself this DVD for Christmas. I agree with hypatia ... Donald Pleasance and Nigel Hawthorne are outstanding in this series. Not the best BBC production I've ever seen, but wonderful, wonderful performances. Alan was suitably smarmy as the "bestial Slope." I'm watching it again this week.

Oh, and I laughed so hard when Mrs Bold hits him across the ear! LOL I just finished watching the series last night. I thought it was a brilliant show and Alan was amazing in it. ;D ;D

I loved every last second of this set. Wonderful! I enjoyed Donald Pleasance, and Nigel Hawthorne, and Geraldine McEwan and oh, shoot, the guy that played Bishop Proudie (and also Richard Bucket--poor man...the henpecked hubby).
The interaction between Harding and his son-in-law Dr Grantly was wonderful. I found Grantly funny at times, and exasperating too! The whole intrigue with Bishop Proudie and his wife, and the "bestial Slope" was brilliant.
Favorite scenes: Eleanor boxing Slope on the ear, and he falls down flat; and at the end, where Slope tells the Proudies "I hope you live forever!"

I stumbled across this by accident. saw alan on the front and bought it immediately I thought it was great but (spoiler!) who in their right mind would choose that other guy over alan? and who in their right mind would slap Slope if he propsed to you?!! great show though, with some really excellent characters.

who in their right mind would choose that other guy over alan? I was reading another book that mentioned Arabin (the other guy) as the most boring hero in literature.

I have only watched the one disk with my mother and I don't want to watch the rest without her not that she'd mind... but anyway...
I noticed in this that he has freckles dotted about his nose and the beginnings of his cheeks and he looks ever so cute... how could they have cast him as the bad guy huh!
