I've just acquired this film, albeit on VHS. Apart from the subject matter I did enjoy this film. I must admit I watched 2 particular scenes more than once, heh. Okay, I admit it too, I watched those 2 scenes more than once. I never even pondered the issue that she might be 'illegal' until it was raised later on. I liked the fact that, even though he was a womanizer, he must've been doing something right to keep their affections (old loves). I can't explain it. O'Hara was supposed to be a love-em and leave-em type but was far to 'gentle' and charming to be unlikable (if that makes sense). I was thoroughly bummed about the whole ending...SPOILERS... His death, her last reaction (claiming to her fictitious "mother" that he seduced her), the discovery by him of their true relationship (not that I would have blamed him...he couldn't have known), the fact that she was 'underage'. I do want to say thanks for the warnings. I did not have the girls in the room when I watched it. But I was more uncomfortable seeing those scenes with her and the other kid and her in the theater with the older rotund man than I was with the love-making scenes between P.L. and Stella (at least until I found out how old she was and what their relationship was). My kids have seen more explicit love scenes (by accident) in other films that were far worse than this. I mean, have you seen the last Matrix movie with Neo and Trinity? P.L. and Stella's scene wasn't quite as 'explicit' as the Matrix scene with Neo and Trinity and my kids ended up seeing that film with us (and no, we didn't know that part was coming up). All in all, I liked the film but mostly because of Alan's performance and his character.

Should I ask how many times? Uh...probably not ! Heehee! Hey...where did that question come from? That's not in my nature ! Shame, shame, you know my name ;D!Well..please do anyway, because I'm comfused !You and everyone else! Your welcome !Uh...I'm wagering a guess that you were more comfortable with those scenes between P.L. and Stella, because P.L. is Alan Rickman ! Would you feel the same if the roles were swtiched ?Matrix reloaded was dreadful ! I was rinsing my eyes for days to try and wash that vision of Trinity and Leo from them! It doesn't work by the way !I agree!

Shame, shame, you know my name ;D!Well..please do anyway, because I'm comfused !You and everyone else! LOL! You are bad, but then again, I'm worse! So no complaints. Okay, okay....sigh... I have only seen it twice so far (kids around remember?) but did watch those scenes at least 2 extra times. In all honesty I would not have enjoyed the scenes at all if they'd been reversed, meaning that if P.L. had been in either the scene with the young man or the rotund man in the theater, I would not have enjoyed them. I believe it was the content. The love-making scenes seemed, I don't know, more tender. The other two scenes with Stella and those other two were more coarse, vulgar. In some ways, Stella's view toward physical relations was upsetting to me. Yeah, she appeared to believe that sex was a requirement for getting ahead in the business and took a more cavalier approach to losing her virginity, and that alone was really bothering me. But you also have to remember this was from the late 1930's, right? So that made it a bit more unusual for her to feel that way since sexual experimentation for young women was much more heavily restricted and frowned upon than it is today. And that also leads into your question about my "illegal" comment. I gathered from what her uncle and Meredith said, she was "underage". Can you say Statutory Rape? (I have no idea if that existed way back then in the U.K. but clearly physical relations with a minor was frowned on and Meredith implies he could cause P.L. a whole lot of trouble if others knew she was 'underage'. And the reason I liked O'Hara was because he 'seemed' to be a gentle, more sensitive soul. Certainly more than some of the other men in the movie with the exception of "Bunny". LOL!!! ;D I know what you mean. I am not sure what he/Neo saw in her/Trinity (okay Keanu is cute) but the image of them together for those few minutes just did nothing for me. It was supposed to be very intimate but just seemed too 'cold' to be appealing. Of course a Keanu fan would argue with me I suppose. So you are right, it didn't work.

Ahh...yes...I see what you mean. Thanks for clearing that up. I guess I was confused on the fact that you said something about "old loves", and that threw me off a bit . I agree, except I felt uncomfortable with the relationship from the start ! Then, to find out the ending made it even more tragic!

When I said "old loves" I was referring to the women he was seeing once again when he comes back. They clearly like him and I sensed they'd had some physical relationship thing going on 'way back when'. I got the impression that he was popular with the ladies in his younger days, that's all I was saying.

Hi all,
Sorry if you've already covered this but I recently found out that the title "An Awfully Big Adventure" comes from the story of Peter Pan. When Peter Pan thinks he's dying he says he's not afraid as death will be an awfully big adventure. Alan really does do unusual films - found this one very peculiar but so good. Kind Regards Celandine

Though I liked this movie I did find it unsettleing:-/ I have to agree with you saphira. I just got to sit through the rest of the movie that I haven't been able to watch yet and I too found it unsettleing. I didn't like the ending at all. It was so sad and disturbing. Great performance by Alan, of course.

You know, I recently watched this one again - and I must say that I liked it even more this time around. The characters are all well drawn, even with few scenes. The girl's character didn't seem as annoying and freaky to me this time around - she made a little more sense. And Alan - that speech his gives at the end of the movie when he finds out the truth - just fantastic. What are those lines from, anyone know?

I found Stella rather annoying with her living in her fantasy world making phonecalls to a non-existant mother and her other non-sense.
All in all, I found the film to be sad and I felt rather bad for poor P.L., after he found out who Stella was and that he knew there was not a thing he could do to make things right. P.L.'s emotional anguish before his death, really was a tear-jerker.

Well my best friend and I watched this last night and wow...an intense movie I would say. Unfortunately I figured out the ending about a half an hour before it was over, so watching that second sex scene I must say I was more than a little creeped out. But that did not stop me from watching that first scene twice...nor will it stop me from putting it in the DVD player and watching it again a few times later. Talk about realistic!! I felt like I was actually peaking in his bedroom or something and I think I forgot to breathe.
That being said, yes the movie was disturbing but very well acted by AR, and I thought that the actress who played Stella did quite well, and I despised Hugh Grant by the end of the movie. But I gather you are supposed to!
I would recommend this to any AR fan.

I haven't seen this film but I can honestly say I'd prefer to see this from what I read to Dark Harbour, the whole guy thing is what disturbs me, give me an Alan womanising anyday! And real life is disturbing.

I felt like I was actually peaking in his bedroom or something and I think I forgot to breathe. Oh, I totally agree! Watched this one with my husband the first time, and he said something like 'I can see why the Alan fans like this movie'. OMG - I was so embarassed! LOL And I agree, I hated Hugh Grant's character in this movie, which we're supposed to - and since he's normally so likeable, I think that means he did a fabulous job!

Yeah, just watched it again and OMG...forgot to breathe again. And yes, my hubby who did not watch the movie with us, said something like "so is this the sex movie" LOL!!
Oh, and HermioneSnape, the womanizing is not the bad part...it is the...well, I don't want to give it away to those who have not seen it. Let's just say it was disturbing and leave it at that.
EDIT: OMG someone stop me before I hurt someone!! I just watched it twice more!! I can't stop!! LOFL!
