Yes, this is coming out next year. And someone on IMDb has the entire plot written down (copied from a Spanish website).

What exactly is this going to be all about?

What exactly is this going to be all about? The film is based off a book , same title, by Patrick Suskind the book is great. It is written so well even in its English translation you can smell everything as it is described, so much so I wonder how they can even begin to translate it into film... the nerd in me must point out that the book reached worldwide popularity after Kurt Cobain said in and interview it was his favorite book. anyways... about the story MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD The story follows Jean Baptiste Grenouille...the first part of the book establishes that he has no personal scent, and that makes him creepy to encounter. As the story develops we learn despite his lack of personal odor, he has a highly developed olfactory sense. More developed than any other person. His sense of smell is so subtly attuned that he can distinguish a single, elemental scent among the various aromas and stenches bombarding him, In fact, he can identify individuals from their unique scents, Alone and friendless Grenouille travels in search of new scents. He finds himself in Paris. ( The really impressive thing about the writing here, is that you smell 18th Century Paris) One day he catches a whiff of the most wonderful scent he has ever known. He searches out the source of the scent, determined to have it all for himself. It turns out that the smell he was pursuing it that of a young virgin on just as she is about to flower into womanhood. creepiness... and he kills her. Needless to say the smell of virgin gives way to that of dead body. Grenouille manages to get himself apprenticed to a Perfumer (Dustin Hoffman's role) there he learns how to capture and manipulate scent. As the story progresses, Grenouille leaves his employer and goes on a personal pilgrimage where he discovers what others have always known, he has no scent. After many years of solitude and living like an animal, he again ventures back to the city, this time with the knowledge that the man who controls the power of scent controls all the power. He creates himself a "personal scent". This scent leaves him sheltered and pampered by the local nobility. Eventually Grenouille finds himself in a village known for its perfume trade, and he delights in it. Again he smells that particular scent. This time he knows it is the scent he is attracted to, and not the personal charms of the girl in question. It is the scent that makes others devote their attentions. Jean Baptiste wants to harness that scent at all costs. He wants the power.he is willing to kill without conscience to preserve this most glorious of scents It is his desperate desire to harness and possess that causes Grenouille to prey upon the maidens of the town in order to obtain that which he needs. It is his obsession that lays at the heart of the fear that arises in the town, as murder after murder occurs. Yet, no one suspects him. What ultimately happens is almost unbelievable in its depravity.for anyone that may still read the novel I will not spoil it any further. Alan is cast as the father of one of the maidens

Although Baldini (Hoffman) and Richis (Rickman) will not meet (in the novel!) and Hoffman only filmed in München - here is a picture for you, where they are all together - from left to right: Bernd Eichinger - Producer, the next man I don't know - Antoine Richis, Rachel Hurd-Wood - Laure, Ben Wishaw - Grenouille, Tom Twykwer - the director (you can see him on a picture above, where all are in costumes, but not him... ), and finally Dustin Hoffman - Baldini When I read the book 8 years ago the first time (and could not believe, that I did not know one of our best authors before ) - I was fascinated, but I also thought: this book will never be a movie! How to bring scents into pictures? It can't be pressed into a movie. It is that book, I love the most of all "criminal" books, I have ever read, and I am glad, that AR participates in the movie - and more glad, that he ist too old to be "Grenouille" - as the "Snape - murderer of Dumbledor " it must be enough now with 'the bad guy' and now: suffering waiting till September

OK!! Received a Google Alert in my email this afternoon. On the official website for the movie, they have posted a full-length preview. Granted, its all in German, but it does have Alan in it! I viewed it, but my computer kept refreshing, making it stop and start, stop and start. You get the picture. From what I was able to see, it looks scary as heck!! Check it out! This first link is a link to the story that I read about the preview. www.cinematical.com/2006/05/16/full-perfume-trailer/This link is the link which takes you to the main website and the preview. www.parfum.film.de/Definitely one to leave the kids at home! Plus, not sure if this has been posted yet, but the article states the movie should be released in the states in December. I couldn't remember if that has been mentioned or not.
