Oh yeah! We Americans can't take that lying down! ;D Seriously though, I think British actors are fantastic - there really are a great number of them. But that doesn't mean we don't have excellent American actors. Al Pacino anyone? Robert DeNiro? Helloooo! And the article mentioned NO American actresses! What? Two words: Meryl Streep. And there's Holly Hunter, Gillian Andersen (yes, she's American, folks! A couple years living in Britain as a pre-teen does not a Brit make ). I can probably go on and on. What I think is funny, frankly, is that Kenneth Branagh made the reporter's 'Top 10'. Now, I like Kenneth Branagh fine, and he's been in some great films . . . but he really just does not have the same acting chops as, say, Derek Jacobi (who, by the way, WASN'T in the reporter's top 10). I think the reporter spent too much time thinking about Hollywood actors such as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and made his assumptions about American actors based on actors of that ilk.

And may I add a couple of more great American actresses ... Katherine Hepburn and Bette Davis. And a little more contemporary ... Diane Keaton and Joanne Woodward.
There are many great American actors and actresses. Just because they might not appear in Shakespeare and Wilde doesn't make them inferior to their British counterparts.
That being said, I don't think there should be any distinction made between American and British actors ... just between bad actors and good actors, whatever their nationality.

for me it's not a case of sticking up for the americans the author asserts that american cinema is "yoked" to the special effects industry. While in recent years the FX films have domitated the box office, This does not mean that there are no character driven pieces being made- ie Crash, Brokeback Mountain, the departed. box office success is not a reflection of acting calibre also while traditionally Brits have been able to perform in both film and on stage, American cinema was developed largely by the large film studios which held actors on contract, in order to perfom on stage, they needed studio permission. Actors had to choose a life in Cinema or on stage. As such there was not a large history to rely on. do I think that a theatrical background helps an actor? Heck yeah. (resisting urge to talk about method acting...) anyways you only need to look at our 10favorite actor thread to see that there are a number of great non british actors out there that the ariticle overlooks

Great interview. Alan was his usual wonderful self. But it was so strange seeing SW as a normal person after watching Snow Cake four times last week.
Thanks for posting it, MM.

Hi girls, how are you? ,after a time of relaxation I return to be here, with you ( and with Alan of course! *.*). Yesterday I saw at the principal page of the ARAS site, that Alan perhaps will be assist to the R.A.H of London. Is it officially confirmed? Anybody will go to the Royal Albert Hall of London to see Alan, 28th of October? I looked for some ticket ( e-line booking) , and I could see that there are more armchairs available to book. * emotion * Music, culture, cinema, celebritys, so much people and Alan of course! it sounds like a magical night! Do you think ? It was Melanie Parker who confirmed to Sheena that Alan hoped to attend this, but with any public appearance its always subject to work commitments. Hearing it from his assistant (Melanie) is the best guarantee he'll try to be there we can have.

I think that I have read in some another forum that Alan will be at the stage to present some OSB, is it true? Something like this: ... Alan: "and now the Sense and Sensibility OSB! how wonderful film and..."Emma: "Yes... but I miss you Mr Ferrars!"Imelda: "OMG! I miss you too, Dr House!" huh...to listen to Sense and Sensibility OSB without Hugh & Hugh ( Hugh & Hugh?...it seems like a fast food company LOL) jokes apart
