Do you know why Costner cut Alan's scenes down to almost nothing? He realized the man can act and do it very well. If Costner had performed the role well as he should have in the first place, Alan would not have been able to, (in Costner's view) steal the show. I mean, come on, just how convincing is Robin with a flat, monotonal American accent? Costner's performance held no emotional value whatsoever. He didn't even bother to put forth any effort and merely went through the motions. He gave the same performance in 'Dances with Wolves'; flat, monotonal and emotionless. Rodney Grant was one of the the redeeming factors in that film.
If it had not been for the talent and skill of Alan Rickman, people would have forgot 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' a long time ago.

Perfectly said...I completely agree with you.

There are a lot of things about this movie that irritate me and Costner's performance is only one. Morgan Freeman, another very fine actor, sounded ridicoulous. And throwing in Sean Connery in the end as King Richard was just a cheap trick.
I wouldn't even have watched this movie, much less own it, if it weren't for Alan. He was so wonderfully over the top as the Sheriff. ;D

Think of it this way girls....... Where is Kev? And where is Alan? Ladies,I rest my case........ I did a project on this Ringo and I came to the conclusion that the only two people in this movie worth watching for was Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman, and you're right where is Kevin Costner? er? didn't he make flop after flop! And a Mr Rickman and Freeman made all sorts of wonderful films afterward.

I only brought this film BECAUSE of Alan, and no other reason,I do love Morgan Freeman as well,he is just brilliant, but Alan just steals the film, scene after scene, the man is just so good, but I dont think that he means too,he is always praising the main leads,he is just to generous for his own good LOL

I always thought that Morgan's talent was wasted in this film. I mean, the only purpose of his character is to teach Very Special Lessons that really have nothing to do with the story...

I agree on that. To see an actor of Morgan Freeman's caliber swishing around in Arab robes and speaking like a robot is very painful. What was Costner thinking when he made this movie?

Desraelda he was thinking of himself! As is evidenced by all those Alan scenes that he cut out!
Although the
"You my room 10:30 you 10:45 and bring a friend!"
is the best line only to be matched in the same film by
"You pain or death?"
"Death!"
"Torture him!"
To another prisoner
"Pain or death?"
"Pain!"
"Torture him!"
To another prisoner leaning very casually he then says the best line
"See it makes no difference!"
It makes me laugh just thinking about it!

One of the most essential scenes that gives us insight into the character of the Lord High Sheriff, was cut also. The scene in which George finds out who he is and why he has the position of Sheriff of Nottingham, is truly eyeopening. Before this scene was restored, George's concept of reasoning, just appeared to be random thoughts. No wonder the poor guy is screwed up!

Yes Radiantlight that was an eyeopener for me to I mean after loving this film for so long and to have these delicious scenes put in well it shocked me and the way she said it.
"I birthed you from this very body, we'll see who the freak is then!"
It sends shivers down my spine.

I have the regular dvd, and there are not many special features on there. How dissapointing. I too would love to see why our beloved George is screwed up.

Ok, where does the "Keven cut Alan's scenes" come would be so...so...nasty and obnoxious. :)from? I don't think Keven had a say in what was cut and what wasn't. the sheriff and Robin seem to be in two completely different films. Rickman is by far the most popular character in the movie. So much so that after the test screening, some of the sheriff's scenes were cut by the producers, to prevent him stealing more time and sympathy away from the film's hero. and as stated at imdb so there ya go, screen audience reacts more to Sherriff, Costner helps edit film Horrible! Distasteful! Well, their plan did not work. He was STILL by far the focus of my attention. So, they lose.

Yeah, there is a special edition of it with all the scenes put back in. I'm glad that's the version I got. I never saw it without the deleted scenes put back in.
My favorite part was when he said "And call off christmas!"

The SE has the deleted scenes edited back in instead of having to watch them separately. The deleted scenes are marked with an asterisk on the insert so you'll know what they are. The second disc has some long featurettes including one with Pierce Brosnan narrating the history of Robin Hood. So glad I was advised to get the SE. Is this all on a special edition dvd? I love the deleted scenes and how they show even more why he is as screwed up as he is. I suggest getting the SE version...worth it in my book! But them, Alan in his most gloriously over the top performance is worth every penny wouldn't you say?
